Upper Limb
Shoulder
Problems at the shoulder complex include frozen shoulder, instability problems, rotator cuff problems and referred pain commonly from the neck.
Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis is an extremely painful condition that can occur for no obvious reason. Treatment to a frozen shoulder can help in reducing pain and increasing range of motion.
Rotator cuff tendinopathy is a common cause of shoulder pain. Treatment aims to decrease the swollen, painful rotator cuff tendons with massage and mobilisation, as well as correcting the causative factors. This includes strengthening muscles around the scapula (shoulder blade) as well as the rotator cuff muscle themselves.
Elbow
The most common problem at the elbow is pain around the lateral aspect or outside of the elbow known as tennis or golfers elbow. It is common amongst sports people and manual workers, not necessarily tennis players of golfers! This is often an overuse injury and treatment deals with looking at causative factors as well as treatment of the injury.
Wrist & Hand
The majority of problems at the wrist and hand are either due to an overuse injury or as a result of trauma such as a fall.
Pain could also be referred from other structures, for example from the neck.
